The most popular methods to remove hair in intimate places
Laser hair removal. The most permanent way to get rid of hair in intimate places
At the top of our list is laser hair removal, performed in a professional salon. It is the most effective and permanent method of hair removal with minimal pain. It is also suitable for Brazilian epilation, i.e. complete removal of hair from the intimate areas over the entire surface.
In laser epilation, the hair including its bulb is destroyed by laser radiation. The laser pulse is converted into heat on contact with the hair, which burns it completely. The hair is thus virtually destroyed and can take several years to recover.
Laser hair removal reportedly only works when there is a high contrast between the hair and the skin, so it is most effective on light skin with dark hairs. This was true with older models of lasers, but today’s more advanced technology can work on all hair and skin types.
Since the laser only works on hairs in the active growth phase, which is always only a portion of the hair, multiple repeat sessions, typically 5-6, are required to achieve perfect epilation. Logically, this is a procedure that is quite expensive, but remember that it can keep you hair-free for years and save you time and money with shaving.
Advantages and disadvantages of laser hair removal
Laser hair removal has a reputation for being the most effective method of hair removal, which is also virtually painless and has minimal side effects when performed correctly. Thanks to it, you don’t have to deal with hair for several years after the procedure.
Its flip side is the high price, which is nevertheless justified given the permanence of the results. However, to get the best for the price, you need to carefully choose the salon where you will undergo epilation.
Shaving - the classic way to get rid of hair in intimate places at home
Shaving was, is and will probably be the most common way to fight hair. Whether you choose to shave with a classic razor or prefer one of the modern razors (which we recommend for intimate areas).
As far as shaving methods are concerned, you can choose between two methods.
Wet shaving
It is recommended to choose this method for intimate parts. This means taking a shower or washing the intimate areas with warm water before shaving, which helps to open the pores and soften the hair.
Ideally, you should also apply a shaving foam or a special shaving gel to the shaved area. The gel should be as gentle as possible, free of perfume, alcohol and other irritants.
We recommend using a razor or razor blade for shaving. As sharp as possible, of course. If the hairs are long, we recommend trimming them with scissors or an electric trimmer before washing.
Dry shaving
No water, no foam, no shaving gel. Just the clean work of an electric razor. We do not consider dry shaving to be an ideal method of shaving intimate areas as it has a greater risk of irritating the skin and causing pimples and redness. It also leaves a small amount of stubble.
We therefore recommend dry shaving only if you are in a hurry or if you are not prone to skin irritation.
Advantages and disadvantages of classic shaving
The advantages of shaving are its painlessness, relative speed and ease when done correctly. Shaving is simple and anyone can do it at home without having to see a specialist. This method remains and will probably remain by far the most popular.
The downside is that your shaved skin will last two or three days at most before you need to repeat the procedure. And so it goes on and on. In the long run, shaving is a terrible time waster.
Not to mention the higher risk of injury, irritation or pimples if you use the wrong tool, the wrong shaving product, an old razor or have poor shaving technique.
Wax and sugar paste waxing of intimate areas
You can also get rid of hair in intimate areas with the help of a special depilatory wax, which can take the form of either already prepared wax strips or pieces of hard wax that need to be heated before application. If you are not experienced, you may prefer to start with ready-made strips.
The wax is heated (the strips do not need to be heated), applied to the area to be treated and then pulled off against the direction of hair growth. Beware, this is a relatively painful experience, especially if you are not used to waxing regularly. To reduce the pain, it’s a good idea to take a warm bath first to help dilate the pores.
The hairs are pulled out with the roots, which means that they will only slowly grow back after the procedure. You can enjoy 4-6 weeks of smooth skin before the hairs reappear.
Hair removal with a special sugar paste works on the same principle as waxing, which is why we mention both methods together.
The main difference between sugar waxing and waxing lies in the length of hair that is removed. Sugar waxing is most effective on shorter hairs up to 2 mm (but also works on hairs a little longer), while waxing removes longer hairs up to 1 cm.
At the same time, sugar waxing is considered to be gentler and less painful than waxing, if only because the length of the hair to be waxed is shorter.
Advantages and disadvantages of laser hair removal
The main advantage of these hair removal methods is that they can remove hair more thoroughly than regular shaving. Smooth skin is guaranteed for several weeks if done correctly. From this point of view, it is a “middle way! between permanent laser hair removal and conventional shaving.
However, the biggest disadvantage is the relative painfulness of the procedure, especially with waxing. This puts many people off right from the start, so much so that they prefer to use a different method next time. Although, of course, this pain is something you can get used to. In terms of pain, sugar paste is much gentler than traditional wax, so it is recommended for more sensitive individuals.
Another problem is that such self-assisted waxing can be challenging at first and requires some skill. Thus, the first attempts can be rather inglorious – that’s why many people prefer professional waxing salons, which on the other hand becomes more expensive in terms of price.
Depilation with cream - another option to get rid of hair in the lap
A method of chemical hair removal that is gentler than shaving or waxing. It requires a special depilatory cream that is simply applied to the area and left on for a while. Depilatory creams contain active ingredients that dissolve creatine in the hair shaft. The hair is subsequently weakened, dissolves or falls out. The remaining hair and the rest of the cream are then removed with a special squeegee.
Please note that we do not recommend using ordinary epilation creams for epilation of the intimate areas, but only creams specifically designed for intimate epilation!
The skin remains smooth after epilation with a cream typically for about 3 days, rarely up to a week. After that, the procedure needs to be repeated again.
Advantages and disadvantages of depilation of intimate areas with cream
This method is attractive for its complete painlessness and ease of use. However, for its maximum effectiveness, all the instructions provided with the product must be strictly followed.
However, cream waxing is not recommended for people with more sensitive skin, as the chemical components of the cream can cause irritation to some, especially to the mucous membranes in the intimate area. It is recommended to apply the cream to a small area as a test before the first application to see how the body will react.
It should also be added that cream waxing will only rid you of hair for a short period of time, so in terms of time it is as repetitive and lengthy a process as shaving.
Other ways to depilate intimate parts that we can mention but not recommend
The above methods were the most common and, within reason, the best ways to treat hair, whether in terms of cost, performance or time. However, we can also mention a few other methods of hair removal, which are not recommended for the purpose of intimate hair removal.
- Mechanical or tweezer epilator. A device equipped with dozens of tiny tweezers that capture and pluck the hair. It is a rather painful method unsuitable for the sensitive intimate area, suitable at best for epilation of the groin, with dubious long-term results.
- Electric epilator. In this method of epilation, a needle probe is inserted into the skin to destroy the root of the hair with a weak electrical impulse. Compared to other epilation methods, it is considered a less effective option and is also not highly recommended for intimate areas.
- IPL or pulsed light. It works on exactly the same principle as laser hair removal. However, compared to laser, the pulsed light beam is less precise and requires more contrast between the skin and the hair. It is therefore a sort of weaker, less effective version of laser hair removal.
- Granny's advice on hair removal. There are a number of homemade and natural recipes to depilate the skin or reduce hair growth. You can try a mixture of hot water and baking soda, or a mixture of sugar, egg white and cornstarch, and many other tips circulating the internet. But our advice is to avoid these attempts, especially in the intimate areas. Stick to some of the more tried and tested methods instead.
